Seed production

The acorn crops of leafy tree species meaning the main population provide the seed requirements of sapling production on our forest areas. During seed collection the different seed groups are divided according to regions of their origins; thus, it can be granted in most cases that the seeds or saplings with the genetics characterising the given region can be sowed or planted in the artificial forestations. Acorn collecting is periodical due to periodical crops of the main tree species – beeches and oaks.

The acorn quantity collected yearly and sowed in the nursery garden changes in accordance with it; however, sapling quantity required to forest reconstructions can be provided even in case of weaker crops through buying good-quality oak and beech acorns with appropriate genetic basis. Common oaks, sessile oaks and beeches are sold in years with bumper crops of acorns.

Getting adjusted to the changes occurring as a result of the access to the EU our seed-reproduction substance-sources with identified origin have been registered, thus they are in the National Register of Seed-Reproduction Substance-Source.

There are 276.51 hectares of seed-production stocks on the area of our private limited company. An important task of the near future is to have further seed production stocks selected and registered as seed collecting areas are under a stricter control of registration in the European Union. Two seed-production plantations are located on the area of our private limited company: the larch plantation in Surd and the scots pine plantation in Obornak. Only maintenance tasks had to be accomplished in both plantations in the past years: branch trimming, cultivation of spaces between rows, chemical protection against any vermin. Besides these tasks cones are collected and seeds are centrifuged in case of good acorn-crops.

To be able to use the most proper seed treatment and seed storage processes meeting the requirements of the era a seed storing cellar and a seed storing attic, a seed centrifuge and a laboratory for seed testing were built in Bajcsa; and in 2007 a modern seed storehouse as well. The right temperature and humidity in the seed storehouse will enable the professional and secure storage during the entire winter. Watering and airing are solved in the storehouse; the sectors can be divided from each other. To be able to clean pulpy crops we bought a seed cleaning machine in 2001; that way we could increase the efficiency of the work and improve the quality.
